Time response characteristics

Definition

In time response characteristics for a transition (10 % to 90 %) in the 2π phase difference, the transition time when the pixel value is changed from a larger value to a smaller value is defined as the rise time, and the transition time when the pixel value is changed from a smaller value to a larger value is defined as the fall time. Since the pixel values are made corresponding to 8-bit gray levels, the controller is set so that the voltage value is maximum when the pixel value is 0 (zero) and decreases as the pixel value increases.

Measurement method

Using a cross-nicol optical system( see “Phase modulation characteristics” )where the phase modulation can be observed as intensity modulation, changes in the output light intensity are measured with a photodiode and an oscilloscope. Specifically, the output light intensity change is measured by switching between phase 0 and 2π, and the light intensity change is then converted to a phase change to calculate the rise and fall times required for a transition from 10 % to 90 %. As one example, the time response characteristics of the X15213-03B LCOS-SLM are shown in the graphs below.

The average rise and fall times for each of our LCOS-SLM types are shown below. The rise time tends to be faster than the fall time.
