How to select an LCOS-SLM

Hamamatsu Photonics offers an extensive lineup of LCOS-SLM to cover a diverse range of applications. To select an optimal LCOS-SLM for your needs, we recommend you take the following points into account.

Selecting an LCOS-SLM based on the light intensity of the light source used

Four types of LCOS-SLM are available with different recommended average light intensities that depend on the mounted mirror and heat dissipation method. This allows you to select the optimal model according to your application.

To find the peak power of the light source, refer to the measurement examples shown on the “Light resistance” page of “LCOS-SLM characteristics.

This LCOS-SLM utilizes the reflection of light from aluminum pixel electrodes formed on the CMOS chip and has a wide reflection band, making it usable over a broad wavelengths range.

This type has a dielectric multilayer film designed for specific laser wavelengths and formed on the pixel electrodes. Compared to the wide wavelength band type, it provides higher reflectivity to reduce the absorption of light inside the LCOS chip and in this way delivers excellent performance in light utilization efficiency and light resistance.

This type has a head designed for specific wavelengths and equipped with a water-cooled heatsink that suppresses temperature rises in the liquid crystal caused by laser irradiation to further improve the light resistance, making it compatible with high-power lasers.

Besides having a water-cooled heatsink, this type employs sapphire glass for the glass substrate to enhance the heat dissipation efficiency and boost the light resistance. This type is usable with lasers of 700 W or higher such as those used for metal processing tasks.

Selecting an LCOS-SLM based on the wavelength of the light source used

The optimal model for each type of our LCOS-SLM depends on the wavelength of the laser light to be irradiated, so the wavelength of the laser light source must be considered when selecting the optimal model.

We currently offer a lineup covering the wavelength range from 400 nm to 2050 nm. Please select the model that best suits the light source to be used.

Quick reference for LCOS-SLM lineup

The table below gives the recommended average light intensity for each type of our LCOS-SLM and the wavelength range supported by each model. Refer to this table to select the optimal model for the light source used.
