Phase modulation characteristics

The changes in intensity corresponding to 8-bit pixel values (256 gray levels) are measured using a cross-nicol optical system as shown in the figure where the LCOS-SLM output is obtained as intensity modulation. The orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the LCOS-SLM are horizontally aligned, the polarizer is placed so that the polarization direction of the laser beam is 45 degrees relative to the liquid crystal molecules, and the analyzer is set at a 135 degree angle to form a cross-nicol arrangement. The aperture size is set to 10 mm in diameter. The phase value (φ) can be calculated from the output light intensity (I) using the following equation:

I = (Imax - Imin) sin2(φ/2) + Imin

Imin : Minimum light intensity

As one example of measurement results, the graphs below show the output light intensity of the X15213-03B LCOS-SLM and the calculated phase modulation.

The phase modulation of LCOS-SLM differs depending on the wavelength. The X15213-03B is adjusted so that the maximum phase modulation is 2.28π radians and the phase resolution will then be 0.009π/digit.
